2011 International REU Site Program in Ghana

Virginia Tech invites students to participate in its NSF-funded International Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana from May through July 2011. The program will run pending funding by the NSF.  The goal of this program is to expand the educational experience of participants through research in ecology, environmental science, and conservation biology in tropical sub-Sahara Africa. Participants will travel with the Program Director to the University of Cape Coast, Ghana during the summer to work on defined research projects under the mentorship of Ghanaian scientists. They will conduct carefully selected projects focusing on ecological studies in the Cape Coast area such as the Kakum National Forest, one of the few virgin forests in Africa. Weekly seminars and workshops, led by Ghanaian professors, will provide participants opportunities to learn beyond their disciplines. Field trips to cultural sites will take place during the weekends. Airfare, stipends, room and board will be provided.
